North Carolina auto accidents and motorcycle accidents cause a wide range of serious injuries that have a devastating impact on people’s lives. Call and talk to a lawyer before you talk to an insurance adjuster. I can help you avoid the common mistakes that often prevent seriously injured people from being compensated for their losses. I can help you if you are suffering from the trauma of an auto accident.
Call the Law Office of Douglas J. Meis for a free, no obligation consultation about your case. (336) 725-9090 or email me at dougmeislaw@gmail.com
The insurance company is NOT “on your side”. They make a profit by taking in more money (premiums) than they pay out (claims). It is the job of the insurance adjuster to pay out as little as possible in accident claims. You need an advocate who is on your side. You need an attorney who is going to work hard to make sure you are fairly compensated for your injuries. Douglas J. Meis is always “on your side”.
You don’t owe me a legal fee unless I recover money for you. I handle all accident cases on a contingency fee basis. That means that I only get paid at the end of a case where I helped you to receive a monetary settlement. There are no “up front” fees or hidden fees and costs. The initial consultation is free with no obligation.

1. HOW DO I PAY MY HOSPITAL BILLS?
The at-fault driver that hit you and his insurance company will be responsible for your damages. That includes your hospital bills. That payment, however is likely to come as a lump-sum settlement at the end of your case. If you have health insurance, you should use that to pay for your medical treatment. You may also be able to use medical payments (or “Medpay”) coverage to pay for some of your medical bills. Medpay coverage is optional coverage that you may have with your auto insurance and it can pay for medical expenses up to the policy limit regardless of who is at fault. If you do not have health insurance, we can ask your medical provider to agree to hold your bills and not ask for payment until your case is settled. Douglas J. Meis will help you work through all of your available options about medical billing. We want you to focus on healing and getting your life back to normal.
2. WHAT IF MY INJURIES KEEP ME OUT OF WORK?
When you are injured by a careless driver, they are responsible for all of your damages, including lost wages. I will make sure that any settlement of your claim includes payment for all lost wages while you were recovering from your injuries. In more serious cases where an injury prevents you from going back to your job, you are entitled to payment for permanent disability and future lost wages.
3. CAN I GET A RENTAL CAR?
Yes. If your car is damaged and you need transportation, you can get a rental car until your vehicle is repaired or replaced. Our office can help make the arrangements with the insurance company to get you a rental car.
4. WILL I HAVE TO WAIT TO GET MY VEHICLE REPAIRED? No.
Property damage claims are handled separately from your injury claims. You will be able to get a check for the property damage right away.
5. WHAT IF THE OTHER DRIVER DID NOT HAVE INSURANCE?
If the other driver was driving without insurance, you will be covered by uninsured motorist coverage. Every auto and motorcycle insurance policy is required to have uninsured and underinsured coverage. This means that your own insurance will protect you and cover your damages if you are injured by a careless driver with no insurance.
6. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO SETTLE MY CASE?
Every case is different. It often depends on how long it takes you to heal from your injuries. Once you have completed your treatment and we can determine all of your damages, we will move quickly to get you the compensation you deserve.
7. WILL I HAVE TO GO TO COURT?
Very few personal injury cases ever go to court. Most cases are settled out of court after direct negotiations with the insurance company. Some cases are settled in a mediated settlement conference. When cases go to court, it is usually because there is a dispute over who is at fault or about the extent of the injury. Douglas J. Meis is an experienced negotiator and can help you make the right decisions about settling your case or going to court.
8. WILL I HAVE TO PAY ANY HIDDEN COSTS?
No. We don’t charge costs like postage, copying and paper clips to our clients like some law firms. We don’t believe in charging every nickel and dime cost to our clients. If your case is going to involve any significant cost, we will consult with you and give you control over any cost that you might have to repay.
